Welcome to the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at Tufts.

We are a close-knit department that offers five mainstage productions a year, supports student capstone and thesis productions, and welcomes several visiting artists to campus on an annual basis. We produce a range of work that includes musical theatre, originally-written student creations, classic and contemporary plays from across the globe, and as well as dance from a variety of social and cultural traditions. We offer numerous opportunities for student involvement in performing, producing, designing or technical theatre. Our students range from individuals who came to Tufts with professional dance and theatre experience to those who have had no formal training prior to coming to campus but are eager to learn.

We welcome any student who wishes to think through the politics of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality and class and how those identities inform performances on and off stage. We welcome students from underrepresented communities, and we believe that people of color, disabled people, queer and trans folks, and first-generation scholars produce new ways of seeing and knowing that facilitate thinking and working in a diverse classroom.

Our faculty includes twenty-five full-time and part-time faculty and staff in areas including acting, dance, design, directing, dramatic history and literature performance studies, dramaturgy, film, production, and technical theatre, we offer an undergraduate major and minor in Theatre and Performance Studies, a minor in Dance, and a PhD program in Theatre and Performance Studies.

Please take a moment to look through our course offerings, our faculty, staff, and graduate students, as well as our productions in order to get a fuller sense of who we are and what we value. If you are interested in learning more, reach out to us so that we may add your name to our mailing list.

Also come visit the Theatre and Performance Studies office in the Aidekman Arts Center and the Dance office in Jackson Gym. My office is open to any students and visitors who want to talk about the work that we do in this department.

Warmly,

Kareem Khubchandani
